Audience Theory

Exam speak
  • The issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically British) by international or global institutions.
  • The ways in which the candidates' own experiences of media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends of audience behaviour.
Blumer's 4 stages
1. People from all works of life would be there watching it (not true)
2. People in the cinema do not know anyone else
3. No interaction after the film
4. The audience are not organized

Uses and Gratifications
The audience prefer to be informed, to be entertained and to learn about themselves when watching a film or TV programme.

Heirarchy of needs
1.The need for Information about the geographical and social world news and drama.
2. The need for Identity, by usng characters and personalities to define our sense of self and social behaviour film celebrities.
3. The need for Social Interaction through experiencing the relationships and interaction of others
4. The need for Diversion by using media for purposes of play and entertainment.
